A Look at Your Teeth Whitening Options

Teeth are one of the best indicators of overall general health and quality of life. In part because of this, the state of our teeth has a disproportionate effect on how we are perceived. As a result, many people feel uncomfortable about their teeth if they are stained or dark. Fortunately, several cosmetic dentistry procedures can whiten your teeth to improve the aesthetics of your smile.

In-Office Whitening

In-office whitening is the quickest and easiest way to dramatically improve your smile. There are two basic forms of in-office whitening. The basic gel method uses a bleaching compound to remove stains from enamel and lighten the underlying dentin. After cleaning your teeth and covering your gums with a protective barrier, your dentist will apply the gel to your teeth, reapplying it periodically for thirty minutes to an hour. Laser bleaching uses a light-sensitive gel that harnesses laser energy to lighten the teeth. This process is faster than traditional gel whitening, although both are quick, easy, and effective.

At Home Whitening

At home-tray bleaching is an inexpensive and gradual tooth whitening strategy suitable for many patients. Your dentist will take molds of your teeth and use them to cast individualized whitening trays, which are then filled with a whitening gel and worn for one to two hours a day for several weeks. Although this is a longer process, it often produces the best results.

Over-the-Counter Products

These tooth-whitening products, such as toothpastes, strips, and generic trays, are generally less effective than professional treatments. Although they may be useful for removing superficial stains or maintaining your white teeth after a professional treatment, results are negligible.

If your teeth are yellowed or dull, the cosmetic dentists at Charles M. Marks, D.D.S. and Dental Associates can restore them to a lustrous white. Our Manhattan practice provides many different forms of restorative dentistry, and we can help you select the perfect solution for your dental problem.
