The Importance of a Proper Teeth Cleaning Regimen

Excluding special visits for specific issues, you only see your dentist twice per year. This leaves your oral health in your hands for a majority of the year, so make the most out of your home care so that your biannual visits to the dentists are always a positive experience. Here are the essential steps you should take when cleaning your teeth:

Woman Cleaning Teeth

Brush twice daily: Most adults do not brush their teeth long enough (at least 2 minutes in the morning and at bedtime). Avoid this issue by keeping an egg timer in the bathroom or brushing your teeth to the tune of a song. Brushing the teeth is your biggest defense against tooth decay, which can be painful and costly to repair. When you do brush, use a soft bristled toothbrush that comfortably reaches the back molars and fluoride toothpaste. Brush every exposed surface of each tooth while rolling away from the gum line. Once all the teeth have been addressed, brush the tongue gently to ward off bad breath.

Floss once daily: To keep plaque from accumulating in the gums and causing gingivitis, floss gently between the teeth. Use a generous length of floss and gently work it in between the contacts of the teeth. Rotate the floss through your fingers as you go so that you can use a fresh surface for each portion of the gums. If you haven’t flossed recently, you may notice swelling or bleeding, but this will subside with regular gum care.

Rinse after meals: When food residue is allowed to accumulate on the teeth, it mixes with saliva and bacteria to create plaque. This will slowly eat away at your gum tissue and tooth enamel, leaving your mouth highly susceptible to infection. Rinse with mouthwash after eating where possible, and use water when mouthwash is not available.

By following these simple care instructions and making regular visits to the office of Charles M. Marks, D.D.S. and Dental Associates, you will have a healthy smile for life. Schedule a consultation for your next dental check-up with us on our website or call (212) 279-1232.
