How to Care for Your Dentures

With the right care, your dentures will last for years and provide you with confidence whenever you eat, smile, or speak. Your dentist’s office can supply you with the information and tools you need to keep your dentures in good shape. Following a few easy steps at home each day will prevent plaque buildup and stains from detracting from the appearance of your dentures and your smile.

Remove Your Dentures Every Night
Your dentures should be removed at night. This is for both cleaning purposes and to allow your gum and palate tissues to rest and breathe. Removing your dentures decreases the likelihood of mouth sores as well as wear during the night if you clench your jaw in your sleep. Store your dentures in a safe place in a hard case, and don’t leave them where children or pets can access them.

Clean Your Dentures Regularly
Remove your dentures and brush them after every meal. Use only a soft-bristled toothbrush or denture brush and toothpaste designed for dentures, as the wrong tools can damage them. Ask your dentist if you aren’t sure which products you should be using. You can use fizzing denture cleaning tablets as needed to dislodge food particles and buildup before brushing.

Visit Your Dentist
Maintaining regular dental checkups is an important aspect of denture care. Your dentist will examine your mouth and your dentures for wear or problems. Over time, the fit of your dentures will need to be adjusted; only a dental professional should perform an adjustment. Dentures are designed to last five to ten years before replacement. Your dentist will tell you when it’s time for you to have a new pair of dentures made.
