Everything You Need to Know About Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are exactly what they sound like; they literally “fill in” an area of your tooth. A dental filling is a type of dental restorative your dentist uses after removing decayed matter from your teeth. They are also ideal for repairing teeth that have chips or cracks. Talk to your dentist about which type of dental filling is right for you.

Types
Your dentist may recommend a direct or an indirect dental filling. Direct fillings are placed immediately after your dentist removes the decayed material. In contrast, an indirect filling typically requires at least one additional dentist visit. During the first visit, your dentist makes impressions of your teeth and applies a temporary restoration. Your dental restoration is custom-made in a laboratory and it is affixed on the tooth during a subsequent visit. These types of fillings include crowns, veneers, bridges, inlays, and onlays.

Materials
Indirect and direct fillings are made from a variety of materials. Dental amalgam is a strong, durable material that stands up well to the forces exerted by biting and chewing. It’s also highly resistant to future occurrences of tooth decay. Other choices of materials include composite resin, glass isomer, resin ionomer, and ceramic. These materials are popular choices because they closely match the shade of the natural teeth. Gold alloys are another potential choice for your fillings. This material is typically used for crowns, fixed bridges, inlays, and onlays. Your dentist can help you determine which type of material is best suited for your needs.

Procedure
Before applying the filling, your dentist applies an anesthetic to eliminate the possibility of discomfort. Then, he or she uses a special instrument to remove the decayed portion of the tooth. The area is thoroughly cleaned and then the filling is applied. Finally, your dentist removes any excess filling material and polishes the restoration.
