How to Handle an Avulsed Tooth

An avulsed tooth, or a knocked-out tooth, can be a painful experience and is considered a serious dental emergency. Though it can be difficult to save an adult avulsed tooth, it is more likely that the damage can be repaired if you act quickly following the injury. Handle the tooth with care by the crown and avoid touching the root, or the tip that was hidden beneath the gums. If the tooth is covered with dirt, rinse it with milk or water. Do not scrub it with a washcloth or your fingers—this may damage it. Store it in a cup with milk, water, or saliva until you can get to your dentist’s office. It is very important to keep the tooth moist until you can reach your dentist for help.

Ideally, your dentist should treat you within an hour of your accident. If you are looking for a dentist in Midtown Manhattan, consider scheduling an appointment with Dr. Charles M.
