Heightened Risk
Seniors are at special risk for certain conditions that affect oral care, such as dry mouth, diabetes, tooth sensitivity, and gum disease. In fact, nearly one-third of older adults have untreated tooth decay, and nearly a quarter of those between 65 and 74 have severe gum disease. Dry mouth may be caused by medications or certain medical disorders. Gum disease may be worsened by systemic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer that disproportionately affect older populations.

Simple Guidelines
Fortunately, the early stages of gum disease are reversible, and regular check-ups with your dentist and good oral hygiene can ensure early detection and treatment. Like dental patients of all ages, seniors should be sure to brush their teeth twice per day with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, floss at least once daily, and have regular professional cleanings by a dentist.

Special Procedures
If you are like many older adults, you may rely on crowns and bridges to strengthen damaged teeth or replace missing ones. If you have weakened, chipped, or missing teeth, talk to your dentist about how a crown can cap and strengthen a damaged tooth. Crowns can also improve your teeth’s appearance and shape and give you a straighter smile. If you are missing more than one tooth, your dentist may recommend a bridge or dental implants.
