Getting Dentures? Here's What You Can Expect

False teeth

Everyone is born with one set of permanent adult teeth. Unfortunately, our teeth can’t regrow or repair themselves, which is why many adults turn to dentures later on in life. If your dental health has regressed to the point where full or partial dentures are the only option, you may be feeling anxious about what to expect. Your Manhattan dentist will give you the best advice to help you live your life with dentures. In addition to your dentist’s professional advice, here are some important things to know about wearing dentures for the first time.

New Sensations

Wearing full or partial dentures will produce new sensations that may take some time to dissipate or get used to. For example, you may produce extra saliva for a while after getting your new dentures. Soreness is also expected, usually within a few hours of putting in your dentures. If pain and discomfort continues, make an appointment with your dentist right away.

Eating With Dentures

Food might seemingly lose its flavor at first, but this is only because the messages your brain is receiving about your dentures can overpower those from your taste buds. You may also have trouble sensing how hot some foods and drinks are. Try to divide up food in your mouth so you are chewing on both sides, as this will even out the pressure on your dentures and may help with some initial soreness and discomfort.
