Tips for Teaching Your Kids Good Oral Hygiene Habits

Two Young Girls Brushing Teeth at Sink

As adults, we only get one set of teeth for the entirety of our lives. But while oral hygiene is incredibly more important as we get older, it’s never too early to establish a good oral care routine. If you have children, teaching them about proper oral care at a young age is an investment that will pay lifelong dividends. After you find a great family dentist in Manhattan for you and your children, take time at home to teach your kids good oral hygiene habits. Here are a few tips to make sure the message sticks.

Show Them Proper Brushing Techniques

It’s not enough for your children to brush twice a day with an ADA-approved toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste—they need to brush correctly. Take time to show your children how to properly brush their teeth, making sure to clean the outer surfaces of each tooth and angling the brush along the outer gumline. Also show them how to brush the top and back of each tooth.

Teach Them How to Floss

Flossing removes food particles and plaque between teeth that brushing misses. Every adult should floss their teeth at least once per day, as should children four years of age and older. Show them how to use floss on their own, but keep a close eye on them until they are about eight years old.

Reward Them for Taking Care of Their Teeth

Now is the perfect time to teach your children about the benefits of good oral hygiene. To instill a passion for good oral hygiene, reward your children for taking care of their teeth. Schedule bi-annual cleanings and check-ups for your children, and give them money for every visit that doesn’t reveal any cavities.
