The Uses and Types of Dental Crowns

Patient at the dentist

Dental crowns are essentially a fabricated cap of sorts that fits over your natural tooth. Your dentist may recommend a crown for a number of different situations, including both general and cosmetic dental concerns. Dental crowns can also be made from a variety of materials, each with their applications and benefits.

Dental Crown Uses

In general and restorative dentistry, a dental crown is most often used to preserve a tooth that might otherwise be lost. This can happen when the tooth is weak generally, when it requires such a large filling that the tooth by itself cannot support the restoration, or when a tooth is broken, chipped, or cracked severely. A crown may be necessary to secure a dental bridge in place. It is also advised to apply a dental crown after root canal therapy since the tooth’s blood supply no longer exists, making it brittle and prone to fracture.

In cosmetic dentistry, dental crowns can be used to cover unsightly existing dental work, such as large amalgam fillings, for a more natural appearance. They may also be the preferred option when dealing with teeth that are severely discolored, or to correct gaps between the teeth when bonding or veneers are not the best option.

Dental Crown Types

Dental crowns can be fabricated from metal, metal alloys, porcelain, ceramic, resin, or a combination of materials. Stainless steel crowns are often used in pediatric dentistry when needed, but they can be used in adults as well. Metal alloys such as gold alloy are sometimes used for dental crowns, and offer the benefits of durability and minimal wear to adjacent teeth. Porcelain, ceramic, and resin are all tooth-colored and can be shade matched to your other teeth for the most natural look possible.
