Foods to Eat for a Whiter Smile

There are a few different teeth whitening options that you can find at the drugstore or in your dentist’s office. All of these procedures and kits are very effective, but what if you could keep your teeth looking bright by eating certain foods? Continue reading for a look at some foods that will keep your body and mouth healthy.

Crunchy Fruits and Vegetables

In addition to the many vitamins and nutrients you will gain by eating fruits and vegetables, these same foods act as natural enamel polishers and stain removers. When you eat apples, carrots, broccoli, and other crunchy foods, they act as mild abrasives that scrape plaque and bacteria off of the tooth’s surface. As you eat these fruits and vegetables, your teeth may become brighter and surface stains may decrease in color and size.

Dairy Products

Certain dairy products—like cheese, milk, and yogurt—offer calcium, protein, and lactic acid to strengthen and whiten your teeth. Calcium is a mineral that fortifies your bones and tooth enamel, making the enamel stronger against tooth decay and acid-producing bacteria. Lactic acid is naturally produced from dairy and strenuous exercise. It is believed that lactic acid can help whiten tooth enamel and remove surface stains.

Onions

It may seem surprising that raw onions can brighten teeth, but the sulfuric compounds found in these vegetables helps prevent plaque from building on your teeth. Even though you may not like your breath after eating raw onions, you may start to notice a brighter smile. You are also likelier to brush your teeth or use a mouth rinse after eating a raw onion, and both of these actions help prevent plaque and bacteria from building up on your teeth and gums.
