Gingivitis vs. Periodontitis

Unfortunately, gingivitis is a common occurrence in today’s society. Periodontitis is quickly becoming just as prevalent. Dentists, periodontists, and hygienists are constantly educating patients on proper dental care to help prevent gingivitis before it can become periodontitis. Gingivitis is the precursor to periodontitis, also known as gum disease. It is usually accompanied by swollen and red gums that may bleed while brushing your teeth. Gingivitis can cause discomfort in the gums, especially as it worsens. Thankfully, gingivitis can be reversed with daily preventative care, such as flossing, teeth brushing, and regular teeth cleanings with your dentist. Periodontitis is the advanced form of gum disease. Pockets of infection and bacteria usually gather under the gums and around the teeth. The gums may also recede, causing the teeth roots to become exposed. Periodontitis cannot be reversed, but it can be managed with deep teeth cleaning procedures, oral surgery, and tissue grafts.
