Tips for Adjusting to Your First Week of Invisalign Treatment

Similar to a plastic mouth guard, Invisalign aligners are custom-made to your mouth to slowly shift your teeth into a different place. If you have just received your first aligner, or you are curious, continue reading for some easy tips to help you adjust during your first week of Invisalign.

Tip #1: Start Your Invisalign Treatment Before Bedtime

On the first day of your Invisalign treatment—and every time you switch to a new aligner—try wearing the aligner at bedtime. The first time you put in your new aligner, you may experience discomfort and soreness. By starting the treatment at bedtime, you can sleep through those first hours of discomfort.

Tip #2: Use a Mild Pain Reliever to Ease Discomfort

Consult your dentist and/or medical doctor before beginning any sort of medication, even an over-the-counter pain reliever. Your dentist can suggest the correct dosage to help manage pain and bring down any swelling.

Tip #3: Consider Eating Softer Foods at First

During that first week, your teeth and gums might be sore. You may notice it even more when you eat, so keep your food on the softer side during this adjustment period. Do not let your nutrition suffer, though. Drink protein drinks, if you cannot eat meat at first. Cut up foods if necessary to chew directly with your back molars, which may not be as sore.

Tip #4: Keep a Plastic Container Around

Your aligners need to be in place for more than 20 hours a day, so you want to keep them in your mouth at all times when not eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth. However, when you do take your aligners out, be sure that you keep the plastic container with you. This will help you remember your aligners during this adjustment period so you do not lose them.
