Medications That Increase Your Risk of Gum Disease

Unfortunately, some of the medications you take to protect your physical health can have a detrimental effect on your oral health. Depending on the medications you take, your risk of developing gum disease could increase. Talk to your dentist about all of your medications so he or she is aware of any increased risk of oral health problems and can tailor your care plan accordingly.

Many medications can increase the risk of gum disease. Oral contraceptives can impact your gums, as can steroids and anti-seizure medications taken for epilepsy. Chemotherapy treatments may also increase your risk of gum disease. If you are taking any of these medications, sticking to a good oral hygiene routine and seeing your dentist for regular exams can reduce your chances of developing gum disease and help catch it in early stages when it does occur. Early treatment can prevent serious complications, including the need for extractions.

At your next visit to Dr. Charles Marks, discuss your medications and ask about preventative steps you can take for your oral health. When you need general dentistry in New York or cosmetic dentistry treatments like veneers, call us at (212) 279-1232.
