Reasons You May Need a Tooth Extraction

There are a multitude of reasons your dentist may recommend a tooth extraction, from decay to preparing for cosmetic dentistry treatments. Although the idea of having a tooth extracted may seem overwhelming, the process is typically straightforward, and the recovery is relatively short. Pain medications manage any discomfort after the procedure, and most people can return to normal in a few days. Your dentist is happy to answer any questions you have about your extraction, including why it is necessary. Here are some of the most common reasons why dentists recommend tooth extractions.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is a common cause of tooth extraction. When gum disease progresses to the advanced form of the disease, called periodontitis, the roots that hold the teeth in place begin to deteriorate, as does the bone that supports the teeth. This causes teeth to become loose, and frequently, dentist recommended removing one or more teeth rather than allowing them to fall out on their own. When this occurs, dentures or dental implants can be used to restore the look of your smile.

Crowding

If you have bite or alignment issues caused by crowding, then your dentist may recommend removing one or more teeth to create extra space in your mouth. Typically, removing teeth from a crowded mouth is the first step in a cosmetic dentistry treatment or it is done in preparation for orthodontic treatment in order to create space for teeth to shift into a healthier position. When teeth are removed because of crowding, no restorative treatments are needed.

Infection

Infections, such as tooth decay, can make it necessary to remove the affected tooth to prevent the infection from spreading. Tooth extraction is usually needed when a filling or root canal are insufficient to remove the decay and rebuild the tooth. For these types of extractions, dental implants and dentures are restoration options.
